Feng Shui Bedroom

The best Feng Shui bed room tip that a Feng Shui expert can offer you is to have your bed in ‘command position’. But before you know what is a command position for your bed it is important for you to understand what is Feng Shui.

It is important for you to know Feng Shui is an ancient spiritual discipline which makes use of a process that affects your internal landscape just as much as it affects your physical environment be your home, office or your bed room. Before you start practicing or using Feng Shui enhancements to your living environment it is important for you to know that it is for nourishing and healing your soul. In a Feng Shui practice one is enriching the soul by directing the energies of universe and natural elements such as wind, water, earth, metals to it.

It is so important to stay positive and constantly filled with good, flowing energy. If you do so, your life and all the things you are surrounded by will represent such wonderful qualities as health, happiness, prosperity, love and contentment.

As you know, one of the principles of Feng Shui is that Chi flows through all objects in a space, and each item that is present in or around your home has some effect on whether Chi moves freely or gets clogged up and the same principles apply to your bed room also.

Feng Shui believes all types of energies on the earth fall in two opposite categories, yin and yang. Once you understand this you can understand the logic behind the best Feng Shui bed room tip offered here.

Bedroom is a place where you spend 1/3 of your time so having proper balance of yin and yang is very essential, some yang energy is essential, because it helps you stay motivated get going with your day-to-day chores but too much yang on the other hand can drive you nuts! It can make you feel chaotic, frenzied and over-stimulated. It can make you feel too passionate, so that you can never just sit back and relax in your bed room.

A command position for your bed room in Feng Shui means that you face the door from the far side of the room but are not directly in front of the door. The part of the room diagonally farthest from the entry offers the best Command Position for your bed, it is this position, you are able to benefit from the Chi that enters and flows through the space, while being far enough removed from the doorway that you are not exposed to Chi that is too strong.

Another Feng Shui bed room tip is that you keep your platform beds in a position that provides a solid wall behind you for support. Using this position puts you in visual command of the space, and allows you to face life directly, both literally and symbolically.

Sleeping in line with the door also exposes you to excessive Chi, which can contribute to stress, irritability and health problems, but keeping your bed in commanding position prevents you from negative influences and puts you in control of your space and of your life.

Another Feng Shui bed room tip that I would like to mention about is that never keep your working desk or computer in your bedroom. The logic behind this Feng Shui tip is that the energy of computer (work) and that of rest (bed) are opposite to each other and are therefore incompatible to each other. But in case you cannot avoid this combination you can at least separate the two by using Feng Shui Elements.

As discussed earlier that Feng Shui tips are universal in nature they are applicable to each space or area as discussed in the article on Feng Shui Bagua and the logic behind each Feng Shui tip remains the same. Take for example the Feng Shui bed room tip that advises you not to keep your bed where there is window behind but ideally it should be on your right. The logic behind this Feng Shui tip is to receive the positive energies from the universe when you get up and start a new day.

Though on the outset you may think these to be fairly simple Feng Shui bed room tips, but in reality these tips have strong spiritual or scientific foundation. For example, placing your desk with your back to a large window does not go well with Feng Shui and to think practically working at a computer in this position may be problem because of the glare from the window.

There can be many more Feng Shui bed room tips that can be offered. You can also make use of Feng Shui Color and Feng Shui Elements for balancing yin and yang of your bed room. Like making use of red pillows or changing the color of your bed room curtains, but for that you need to consider many other factors also.

Avoid the overhead beams, the low side of a slanted ceiling, sharp angles from interior corners, and an overhead fan in a room with a low ceiling are some of the common Feng Shui bed room tips that you can find in any Feng Shui book or web site.

Feng Shui Study Room

The study is an important room in the house. This room needs a lot of positive energy. The room should be kept neat and clean and should be clutter free. If the room is cluttered and messy it will produce Sha energy. This is the room where all the creative work and studying is done so there must be as much Chi as possible in the room. It is best to place the chair where there are no shelves present. The chair should be comfortable and should have a high back. Place a picture that is symbolic of water behind the chair, this will increase the flow of creative energy.

The desk should be positioned in such a way that the window is on the left of the person sitting at the desk. If there is no window place a mirror on the left of the person. The door should be visible to the person sitting at the desk. The person's back should not be to the door. Placing a wind chime or a plant can prevent threat that can enter through the window. Place a bamboo or a cactus plant in this room. Both plants grow in harsh conditions and are resilient and symbolize good fortune. Place sharp leaved plants in this room, as they will ward off harmful influences.

10 Feng Shui Tips for a Better Life

The key is energy (or Qi “Chee"). June offers ten quick tips that can improve the flow, transformation, and containment of Qi in your life:

1) Remove shoes before entering a home. Don’t take your problems in with you.

2) Cook at least one meal a day and eat at the table as a family.

3) Never have knives on show – even in a block.

4) Always sit or stand facing the door (or its reflection).

5) Keep the toilet lid down and bathroom and laundry doors closed.

6) Don't sleep under white blankets or doonas.

7) Don't sleep with your feet facing the bedroom door.

8) Don't sleep next to the wall that has the metre box on it.

9) If your front door is in line with a tree or the door of the house opposite, place a Ba Gua mirror above the outside of the door.

10) Never have a Ba Gua mirror in the house. They are far too powerful.

It’s no coincidence that some of these tips are just common sense. You’ve probably been practising Feng Shui for years without even knowing it!

According to June, “this is just the tip of the iceberg. Just a few little changes can make the world of difference. But most solutions are specific to the individual."

Feng Shui Tips

Feng Shui is not superstition, religion or philosophy... it is the Art and Science of living in harmony with the environment. Here are some Feng Shui tips for around the house...

FENG SHUI TIPS - THE ANATOMY OF A HOUSE

Every area of a house can be viewed uniquely according to Feng Shui theory, with some rooms being more important than others just based on the amount of time spent in those locations.

TIP: BEDROOMS
One of the most important Feng Shui tips... Bedrooms should be sacred spaces where an adult or child can retreat and regenerate. We spend roughly one third of our lives in our bedroom, so maintaining balance and serenity in this area is essential.

TIP: MAIN ENTRANCE
Sometimes called the “chi gate,” the main door is like the mouth for the house. It is the gateway between the world and the privacy of the home and air currents literally enter and exit at this point. The positioning of a main door can determine the fortune or misfortune of the occupants.

TIP: SIDE ENTRANCE
Many people enter their home through a back or side door out of convenience. Garage entrances are very common as well. If this is the entrance used more than the formal front door, then the energies at this side entrance will affect you more. This does NOT however change the orientation of your house.

TIP: HALLWAYS
These transition rooms are like the arteries of the house. They should be relatively bright and not too narrow or cluttered. A chronically dark hallway should have a skylight or artificial light on. Ideally, hallways should not be excessively long, unless there are many rooms off the hallway where the doors can remain open.

TIP: LIVING ROOM
The living room is where we entertain, generally speaking. It may also be a place for the family to gather. Some people hardly ever step foot in their living rooms. To the extent that you use your living room, that is how much it will affect your health and well-being.

TIP: DINING ROOM
Like the living room, some people hardly sit down in their formal dining room. This should be a place where friends and family gather for a relaxing time. There should be a moratorium on arguments in the dining room, otherwise family members will eat too fast just to be done with the experience.

TIP: KITCHEN
The kitchen is referred to as the “hearth” of the home. The vibrations in this room are important in the way that food is prepared and the residual affect. Yet it is not considered the most important part of the house since only an hour or less is spent there on a daily basis. Sometimes the location of a kitchen in a house can determine which family members will argue the most or if the whole house is vulnerable to a variety of mishaps.

Generally, the kitchen is NOT the first room you want to see when you enter your house.

TIP: BATHROOMS
A lot of water passes through a bathroom, yet that does not qualify as a water remedy if that part of the house needs the water element to be balanced. Water that leaves through plumbing is not the same as a water fountain or an aquarium, which re-circulates in that same area. Bathrooms usually should not be in the center of the house or the first room your eyes land on when you enter your home. A toilet should not be too close to a sleeping area, which challenges the Western design ideal of having a private toilet adjacent to the master bedroom.

TIP: HOME OFFICE
Over the last twenty years, the “home office” has become a major change in how we live. There are two basic types of home offices: the one where we store and file papers, pay bills and pass recreational time on the computer and the real home office where we sit for at least several hours a day conducting business and generating income. The real office and its location within the houseiscrucial to financial success.

TIP: STAIRS
Stairs should not be aligned directly with a heavily used entrance door. When they exist in the center of the house, the activity of moving up and down the stairs will stimulate the unseen potential of the house, for good or for bad depending on the uniqueness of the house. Stairs of any kind, indoor or out, should be clean and safe to use. Dilapidated stairs and unstable railings are not good Feng Shui for obvious reasons.

TIP: WINDOWS
Windows should always open properly and allow sufficient light or pleasant views into the room. To scale with the room, windows should be a defined height and width. It is not ideal to sleep with your head just inches from a window.

TIP: CEILINGS
Ceilings are ideally flat, without severe slopes. The sloping ceiling will cause the flow of air currents in the room to be chaotic. This contributes to sleep problems.
Exposed ceiling beams are a problem if a person works or sleeps under them. Their downward pressure can contribute to health problems.

TIP: FLOORS
Floors should be level so as not to cause equilibrium problems for the occupants. It is less important if the flooring is wood, stone, or carpet. But the color of the carpet can change the energy of a room. As an example, a green carpet is the wood element and a gray carpet is the metal element.

TIP: THE CENTER OF THE HOUSE
The center point of a house indicates a potential experience or set of circumstances that may affect the occupants. It is generally not an area that occupants spend a lot of time in because it winds up in a pass through area for most floor plans. Occasionally the center of the house is part of a room. The influences that emanate from the center of a house can only be determined with advanced Xuan Kung Feng Shui.

TIP: MODERN FENG SHUI HAZARDS

* Toxic Mold
* High Electro-magnetic fields (EMF)
* Toxic Building Syndrome (includes recycled toxic air)
* Proximity to hazardous materials and substances (interiors and exteriors)
* Exposure to chronic high levels of noise (such as freeway traffic)
* Physical strain and fatigue from unhealthful work environment

Feng Shui Tips & Tricks

By organizing our environment randomly, we do not take control of how it affects us and give it the chance to become an obstacle without even realizing of it. Feng shui teaches us that the spaces where we live or work should be thoughtfully disposed in order to take the best advantage of them and make them be a help to us rather than an obstacle.

Feng shui shows us how our spaces can be designed and re-arranged in order to provide us the right balance and harmony. Simple things such as the position in which we place our desk, can become determinative to the harmony we feel in that space, and affect factors such as the concentration we may have when working in that space.

Among the most important feng shui concepts is the one of bagua. Bagua is a term employed to denominate the map of feng shui which is the tool we can use to evaluate each living or working space. This map's shape is an octagon which is divided in nine different areas. Each area correspond to nine main areas of life and allow us to identify the position of each one of those areas in the space we are evaluating..

Feng shui manages five main elements which we should always have in mind when harmonizing our environment: water, wood, fire, earth and metal. Each one of these five elements move in a different way and make the energy of the environment vary depending on it.

The term chi denominates the energy, which is always changing and moving and depends on the five elements. Feng shui studies the way chi moves and acts as an invisible force determining the kind of energy that objects and everything that surrounds us contain.

As we can see, feng shui can provide us a very rich and wise new world to explore. By acquiring the knowledge it has to provide, we can understand and improve our environment or space, whatever its nature is. This way, feng shui allow us to improve our life style and our energy by maximizing the environment in which we are.

How to Feng Shui Your Bedroom

1. Let go of the TV, computer or exercise equipment in your bedroom. The good feng shui energy in your bedroom is destroyed when these items are present in your bedroom.

2.Open the windows often or use a good quality air-purifier to keep the air fresh and full of oxygen . Be mindful of the quality of air in your bedroom. You cannot have good feng shui in your bedroom if the air you breathe in is stale and full of pollutants. Please note that plants in the bedroom are not good feng shui, unless your bedroom is fairly large and the plants are located far from the bed.

3. Have several levels of lighting in your bedroom, or use a dimmer switch to adjust the energy accordingly. Good, appropriate lighting is very important, as light is our # 1 nutrient and one of the strongest manifestation of energy. Candles are the best feng shui bedroom lighting, but be sure to buy candles with no toxins.

4. Use soothing colors to achieve a good feng shui balance in your bedroom. Feng Shui bedroom decor is a balanced decor that promotes the best flow of energy for restorative sleep, as well as sexual healing. Best feng shui colors for the bedroom are considered the so-called "skin colors", and we know the colors of human skin vary from pale white to rich chocolate brown. Choose colors within this range that will work best for your bedroom decor.

5. Choose the images for your bedroom wisely, as images carry powerful feng shui energy. Best feng shui advice for the bedroom art is to choose images that you want to see happening in your life. Unless you enjoy being sad and lonely, do not use sad and lonely images in your bedroom.

6. Follow the basic feng shui guidelines for your Bed, which are:

* have your bed easily approachable from both sides,
* have two bedside tables (one on each side), and,
* avoid having the bed in a direct line with the door.

7 "good looking" and well-balanced bed is very important in creating a perfect feng shui bedroom. Good mattress, solid headboard and high quality sheets from natural fibers are also very important in creating harmonious feng shui energy.

8 Keep all the bedroom doors closed at night, be it the closet doors, the en-suite bathroom door or the bedroom door. This will allow for the best and most nourishing flow of energy to strengthen your health, as well as the health of your relationship.

Counting Calories

Are all calories created equal? Two diets, same calories—but can one get better results? We explore new research on whether some calories make you fatter than others

New research shows that carbohydrates, fat and protein all act differently in our bodies, proving that calorie-counting is more complicated than simple addition. Here's the latest information on how different foods affect calories in, calories out and the ultimate number you see on the scale.

Counting Calories isn't as simple as the number you see on your food label. In scientific terms, 1 calorie is a kilocalorie (kcal), which is the amount of energy required to raise 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius. According to that definition, all calories are equal, whether from fat, protein or carbs.
So is a calorie a calorie? Biochemically speaking, many experts say yes. But when you address the physiological and psychological effect of calories from different foods, the picture changes.

"Let's take a pure food example to illustrate how this works," says Anne-Marie Nocton, MS, MPH, RD. "If someone were to eat all of her daily caloric requirement as fried onion rings, would the body respond the same way as if all of the calories came from raw spinach? No, because caloric absorption is affected by the composition of the food itself and by the amount of energy it takes the body to process that food. In this example, the body doesn't need to expend many calories to digest and store fat (in the onion rings) because the digestion and storage process isn't very complex. But the spinach contains fiber, and the structure of a fibrous food means that some of the calories will be 'lost' because the body cannot break it all down."

The simple act of eating raises your metabolism, and eating certain foods raises metabolism even more. The energy the body uses in the digestion process is called the thermic effect of food (TEF). "Protein has a higher TEF relative to carbohydrate and fat," explains Rick Mattes, PhD, MPH, RD, professor of foods and nutrition at Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana). While the TEF of protein is about twice that of carbs or fat, the overall contribution of TEF to total calories is small. In a 1,500-calorie daily diet, boosting the protein content from 15% to 35% of calories results in an increased TEF of 21 kcal, or calories, per day--not really very significant.

Mattes, who recently spoke about calorie equality at the American Dietetic Association conference in Anaheim, California, explains that other factors--like the form of a food, appetite, metabolism and dietary compliance--also play roles when you compare calories from different foods.

Special Delivery
Taking the perspective that calories are equal as chemically processed in the body, Mattes looks at the foods rather than just the calories. When comparing and counting calories, the delivery system matters, he reports. Are the calories in solid or liquid form? Researchers comparing apple juice, apples and apple soup found that the juice led to only a small decline in hunger, while apples and even apple soup were better at combating hunger.

In another study, subjects were given either 450 calories of soda or jellybeans, and researchers measured how much they ate later that day. After drinking soda, subjects ate the same amount of calories as usual. After eating jellybeans, however, subjects ate less food later on, so the jellybeans in fact substituted for other calories.

Eating jellybeans and then reducing the amount of food you subsequently eat is called dietary compensation. Mattes notes that solid foods have greater compensatory responses than fluids. "Fluids add to the diet rather than replacing other foods. This is called a weak compensatory response," he continues. And soda isn't the only problem drink--it's fluid calories in general, whether from juice or even milk. In other words, be careful of liquid calories, which may add to your total calorie intake rather than substituting for other foods.

Fuzzy Math
Compare 100 calories of bread with 100 calories of chicken and 100 calories of butter. Mattes explains that high-protein food is most filling (it has the highest satiety rating), while high-fat food is least filling. Thus, eating a higher-protein diet could theoretically help you feel fuller and stay satisfied longer.
While high-protein foods are valuable for their fullness factor, foods such as nuts that are rich in fat and protein have also garnered attention. Many studies have shown that nuts, though high in calories, have high dietary compensation and may even increase metabolism. Mattes illustrated one study that found subjects' resting energy expenditure was 11% higher after nut consumption.

Researchers at the City of Hope Medical Center (Duarte, California) studied two groups of overweight people, both on medically supervised low-calorie liquid diets. One group added 3 ounces of almonds to their daily diet, while the other group added the same amount of calories from complex carbs like popcorn and Triscuit crackers. Both groups ate the same number of calories daily, about 1,000. During the 24-week study, the almond-eating group lost more weight even though they ate the same number of calories as the carb group. Same calories, different results.

Diet Fights
In the counting calories battle of low-carb vs. low-fat diets, low-carb is holding its ground. "Despite the initial skepticism of many investigators, [several] recent studies found that high-protein and/or low-carbohydrate diets do yield greater weight loss after 3-6 months of treatment than do low-fat diets" (Buchholz and Schoeller, 2004).

But not all experts agree that carbohydrate limitation alone results in weight loss. One researcher commented that "lower-carbohydrate diets were associated with reduced calorie intake ... weight loss was predicted by calorie intake, diet duration and baseline bodyweight, but not by carbohydrate content" (Bray, 2003). A calorie deficit is needed for weight loss, and low-carb diets work to reduce calories, pure and simple.

Take a plate of spaghetti and meat sauce from an average restaurant. Of the approximately 650 calories on the plate, about 350 calories come from the pasta and the rest comes mostly from fat in the meat sauce. In this example, choosing a high-carbohydrate (spaghetti only) or low-carbohydrate diet (meat sauce only) would cut caloric intake in half. Either extreme results in a lack of choices and a lack of taste, which probably explains the decrease in total calories consumed (Seshadri, 2004).

Nocton remarks that no matter how precise the study design, diet research can be affected by unknown factors. Though a 1,200-calorie diet may be prescribed, study participants may eat more or less than that amount--even if food is provided and food records are kept. The bottom line? Total calorie intake affects weight, but a lower-carbohydrate diet might result in fewer calories consumed. The downside is that long-term health effects of high-protein/low-carb diets aren't known, and calcium loss may be a concern (Eisenstein 2002).

Compliance Counts
A diet may generate weight loss, but only if it's palatable enough for people to follow for an extended period. That's where personal preference comes in--eat a diet you can stick to. Mattes illustrated one study examining participation rates in a moderate-fat compared to a low-fat diet. The moderate-fat diet had much better compliance after 18 weeks.
Nocton's good news is that "longer-term data tell us that the best diet for good health, weight loss and body composition is the one people perceive as the most boring: unprocessed; high in fiber and whole grains; loads of fruits and veggies; possibly low-fat and fat-free dairy; and rich in the right kind of fats, from fish, flax and some nuts and seeds." And you won't find a study anywhere to refute the benefits of this kind of sound, healthy diet.

Lose the Liquid Calories. Because liquid calories are not correctly compensated for in the diet, they may just add to your total calorie intake, rather than substituting for other calorie sources.

Go for Protein. Protein will help you feel fuller longer, so include a serving at each meal. That's about 3 ounces of cooked chicken/meat/fish or a non-meat source such as an egg or a handful of nuts.

Diet Right. The best diet plan is one that you can stick to--ditch a diet that makes you miserable.

Calories Count. Many experts agree that low-carb diets work because they lower calories significantly. Look at the bigger picture of calories, along with total carbs. Remember that active women need those carbs to fuel fitness performance and maximize recovery.

Feng Shui Tips For Health

East is the direction to focus on when improvement in health is desired. Wood is the element.

1) The most important first step to realizing the benefits of Feng Shui is to perform a Space Clearing procedure. Every environment has accumulated negative energy, or "sha chi", that needs to be eliminated. This procedure will make all other cures more effective.
(Space Clearing Article)

2) The most basic rule regarding health is to make sure that your home is healthy. Keeping it clean, organized and beautiful is the best way to attract positive, healthy 'chi' into your space. The energy in your home needs to be free-flowing and smooth like a river.

3) Keep your home/workplace in good, functioning condition. Do not allow anything to linger in a state of disrepair. Replace anything that is old, broken or faded. Repair peeling paint, cracked walls and ceilings and leaky faucets. Be sure that all windows are in good working condition.

4) The Wu Lu gourd is a powerful symbol of good health, longevity, and harmony in life. Placed on a bedside table or in clear view in the eastern sector of the work area, it will serve as a subconscious reminder that perfect health is your chosen condition. A brass Wu Lu makes a striking and functional paperweight.

5) Keeping a green or earth element candle burning in the east as often as possible is an excellent way to energize healing energy. Candles also create an atmosphere of serenity and help to sooth and calm the emotions.

6) Eliminate all things in your home or workplace that you no longer use. Pass things along to friends or donate them to charity.

7) Work towards eliminating all clutter from your life. Begin to look honestly at why you tend to accumulate so much un-needed stuff.

8) In the study of Feng Shui, toilets are a huge concern. Always keep toilets and bathrooms exceptionally clean. Keep the lid on the toilet closed at all times when not in use, and keep the bathroom door closed at all times.

9) The bedroom is an especially important room when it comes to health, since this is where we regenerate and heal during sleep. Keep the bedroom clean and uncluttered, with a simple decor. Do not bring work into the bedroom. Laptops, phones and exercise equipment are not welcome here.

10) Electronic devices such as TVs, clock radios, answering machines, and electric blankets emit electromagnetic fields that can harm your health. If you must keep any of these in the bedroom, be sure they are at least six feet away from your body, or twelve feet, in the case of a TV. Always cover the TV with a cloth when it is not in use, especially while you sleep.

11) Never place your bed on a wall that has a toilet on the other side. This is considered a health hazard in Feng Shui.

12) In the bedroom, avoid sleeping under sloping ceilings and bookcases or shelves. All of these are oppressive and can aggravate problems such as headaches, restlessness and insomnia. If this type of architecture is unavoidable, a windchime with a horizontal bamboo mounting can help to redirect this oppressive force.

13) Do not sleep directly under a beam. If this is unavoidable, hang a pair of bamboo flutes or a bamboo windchime with hollow tubes from the beam.

14) Beware of poison arrows that point at you while you sleep. Hang faceted crystals in front of protruding corners to disperse negative 'chi'.

15) Do not place a fountain in the bedroom. Fountains are too yang and are considered to be a deterrent to good health in this area. The same rule holds true for potted plants. If you really enjoy a plant in the bedroom, choose one that is relatively small and has gentle, round shaped leaves.

16) Energize the wood sector (east) of your home with lush green accents, such as pillows, rugs, or window treatment. If the east sector is the living room, dining room or any room other than a bedroom, this is a great location for a beautiful potted plant. (Live plants are considered too yang for the bedroom ). In an eastern bedroom, use solid wood furniture as well as green accent colors.

Which direction you should sleep?

“Begin the day with love,
fill the day with love,
spend the day in love and
end the day with love.
This is the only way to God.”

Swami Buaji Maharaj

Swami Buaji Maharaj is a hundred and twenty two years old yogi,
who is also the founder of the Indo-American Yoga-Vedanta Society in New York.

“Never lie down to sleep with your head northward or westward” is a common injunction given from time immemorial by the Indian mother to her children. Almost every Hindu- orthodox or heterodox- observes this dictum of his ancestors, but he doesn’t know the rationale or significance behind the dictum, although it has been handed down to him through generations. For example, Vishnu Purana says: “O King! It is beneficial to lie down with the head placed eastward or southward. The man who lies down with his head placed in contrary directions becomes diseased.” The Varshaadi Nool says: “Sleeping eastward is good; sleeping southward prolongs life; sleeping westward and northward brings ruin.” The Mahabharata says: “Men become wise by sleeping eastward and southward.” There are two Tamil proverbs which run thus: “Vaaraatha Vashvu Vanthaalum Vadakkae Thalai Vaikkakkuudathu”, meaning; ” Even in the heyday of sudden fortune, one should not lie down with head to the north”, and ” Vidakkeiyayinum Vadakkaakaathu”, meaning: “Even the head of the dried fish should not be placed northward.” The Ayurvedic physician seats his patients facing eastward before diagnosing the disease or administering his medicine. Brides and bridegrooms are always seated facing eastward on the wedding day. Even corpses are placed down with the head southward.
The explanation for such advice and practice as discovered recently is as follows: This dear Earth, on which we live, has been for ages past, and is still being subjected to constant exposure to the source of all Energy-Heat, Light, Electricity and Magnetism- the Sun. When its eastern half is heated by the sun, its western half remains comparatively cold. In consequence, a strong and constant current of thermal electricity generated by the sun, travels across the earth from east to west. By this current of electricity the earth becomes magnetized, and its geographical north pole, being to the right-hand side of the direction of the current, is made the magnetic north pole; and its geographical south pole, being to the left-hand side of the same current, is made the magnetic south pole. Thus the earth is rendered a mighty thermo-electric magnet. This is evident from the fact that by the attractive and repulsive forces of its poles, the compass needle, in whatever position it is placed, is invariably turned so as to point to the North and the South.
We have learnt inside the class rooms that a non-magnet kept in contact with a magnet is eventually converted into a magnet, or that magnetism is imparted to it. And that the poles of the magnet have infused opposite polarity into the ends of the non-magnet. Now, we human beings are in perpetual contact with the huge Electro-Magnet, the Earth. We are all therefore converted into small magnets. It has been found by the experiments that the human body also is a magnetable object, though far inferior to iron or steel. This cannot be denied that, for in addition to other causes, there is a large percentage of iron in the blood, circulating through the body.

west

Further, as our feet are magnetized by contact with the northern hemisphere of the earth, where exist all the properties of north polarity is induced in our feet, and consequently, north polarity is induced in our head.

It has been found by the experiments that the human body also is a magnetable object, through far inferior to iron or steel. This cannot be denied that, for in addition to other causes, there is a large percentage of iron in the blood, circulating through the body.

At school when experimenting with magnets we have seen : “Unlike poles attract each other; like poles repel.” We used to restore the magnets back to their place in the laboratory with their unlike poles in contact, so that the polarity may not be destroyed. Now, it is very easy to conceive that if you lie down with your head placed southward and feet northward, the South Pole of the earth and your head, which is the North Pole of the human magnet, as also the North Pole of the Earth and your feet, which is the South pole of your body, being juxta-position, will attract each other, thus the polarity of the human body, natural to it, will be preserved; which if you lie with your head placed northward and feet southward, the like poles of your body and the Earth being in the juxta-position, will repel each other, and thereby the natural polarity of your body will be destroyed or its intensity diminished. In the former position, the polarity acquired by the human body during the day by standing, walking or sitting on the ground, is preserved intact at night during sleep; but in the later position, the acquired polarity is seriously tampered with and destroyed. This arrangement of the poles in the human body is natural to it, and therefore conducive to our health and happiness. The body enjoys perfect heath, if the polarity natural to it is preserved unaltered, and it becomes subject to disease if that polarity is in the least degree altered or its intensity diminished.
This would lead us to infer these arguments apply only to the inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere. The inhabitants of the Southern Hemisphere must lay down their bodies with head northward, for similar arguments. That the bulk of the human race live on the Northern Hemisphere, appears to have been known to the ancient Hindu Sages, as the dictum appears to have come down without any qualifying remark.

sleepWhy the Eastern direction is preferred to the Western for placing the head in the lying down posture is explained thus: “It has been established by experiments on medical electricity that if a current passes from one part of the body to another, it exercises a wholesome influence where it enters, and produces some inflammations in that part of the body whence it goes out. If you lie down with head eastward, the current of thermal electricity, which is constantly passing over the surface of the earth from east to west, passes through your body also from head to feet, and therefore subdues all inflammation present in the head, where it makes its entrance; while if you lie down with head westward, the same current of the electricity passes through your body from the feet to the head, and therefore produces some kind of inflammation in the head, whence it goes out. The head contains the most vital of organs, and the most delicate of mechanisms- the Brain. It is a clear and healthy head that can easily acquire knowledge, and not an inflamed or congested head, which, on the other hand is the hot-bed of vague and distressing thoughts.

The head contains the most vital of organs, and the most delicate of mechanisms- the Brain. It is a clear and healthy head that can easily acquire knowledge, and not an inflamed or congested head, which, on the other hand is the hot-bed of vague and distressing thoughts.

Thus has been elucidated for our benefit, what was commonly considered a superstition hitherto. From this, it is plain that the Sciences of Electricity and Magnetism were not only extensively cultivated by the Ancient Hindus, but also highly developed, and the principles applied in their practical daily life. As other instances of their advanced knowledge of the Sciences, we find that iron or copper rods are inserted at the tops of all temples that Mindulies (Metallic cells) made of either gold, silver or iron are worn on the diseased parts of the body, and that Asanas or seats made of either silk, wool, kusha grass, or hairy skins of the deer or tiger are used when saying prayers. The function of the rod at the top of the temple is the same as that of the modern lightening conductor. The Mindulies serve the same purpose as the electrical belts and other appliances of the present day electrical treatment of diseases. The woolen and skin asanas protect our lives during a thunderstorm. So do the wooden sandals or mithiyadi worn by the sanyasis of old.
For the same simple reasons described above, it is the age long custom among Hindus that younger people should prostrate before the elders and touch their feet with their head so as to acquire magnetic energy and more particularly before the saintly persons, as these saints had magnetized their system by their Tapasya, i.e., by observance of Brahmacharya (celibacy), conducting Poojas, by practice of Yoga Asanas, Pranayamas and meditation, and by austere observances and various spiritual practices.

Unfortunately for us, our ancient sages and saints have left us only a legacy of short, crisp, epigrammatic aphorisms without an amplification or explanation of the rationale behind each. In our littleness we have denominated the legacy as a bundle of superstitions. This one instance must be an eye-opener to us and an incentive to do some research and thinking to get at their real and inner significance.

10 Essential Health Tips (The Basics to Practice Every Day)

1. Move More
Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it's a stress buster. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that's great when you're up to it. Meanwhile, move more. Thought for the day: Cha, Cha, Cha…. Then do it!

2. Cut Fat
Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise. Thought for the day: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine…. Then be one!

3. Quit Smoking
The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill. Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? It seems the stars in every movie of late smoke cigarettes. Beware. Warn your children of the false romance or 'tough guy' stance of Hollywood smokers. Thought for the day: Give up just one cigarette…. the next one.

4. Reduce Stress
Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e.,Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. Thought for the day: When seeing red, think pink clouds….then float on them.

5. Protect Yourself from Pollution
If you can't live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It's a good pollution and dirt from the street deterrent. Thought for the day: 'Smoke gets in your eyes'…and your mouth, and your nose and your lungs as do pollutants….hum the tune daily.

6. Wear Your Seat Belt
Statistics show that seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes. Thought for the day: Buckle down and buckle up.

7. Floss Your Teeth
Recent studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it's because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don't? Thought for the day: Floss and be your body's boss.

8. Avoid Excessive Drinking
While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer. Thought for the day: A jug of wine should last a long time.

9. Keep a Positive Mental Outlook
There's a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. Thought for the day: You can't be unhappy when you're smiling or singing.

10. Choose Your Parents Well
The link between genetics and health is a powerful one. But just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn't mean you cannot counteract the genetic pool handed you. Thought for the day: Follow these basic tips for healthy living and you can better control your own destiny.
